Builder takes his roof back after none payment

Monday, September 21st, 2009

I was watching Look North this evening and the headline news was about a builder who stripped the roof off a house in Barlborough, Derbyshire after a long running dispute over payment.

Royden Toon, from Skegness, spent five hours tearing materials from the house roof until he was talked down by local police.

The builder claimed he was taking back his materials after James Arthur refused to pay fully for his extension.

“He wouldn’t pay so I went to take my materials back off the roof.

“I gave him a letter telling him what I was going to do, he walked off and that was it.”

But, Mr Arthur said he held back payment until the work was done satisfactorily. He said: “We had to terminate his contract.” He added the work had not been done satisfactorily and was six months late in completion.

“He was on a fixed fee, of which he received just over three quarters of the money and he hadn’t got the finances to progress the works satisfactorily.”

The story reminds me of a similar story I featured earlier in the year when a builder Nigel Gray took back a conservatory and porch after his customer would not pay.

I’m sure many of my readers will sympathise with the builder’s actions here, but the wider question is how can we avoid getting to this situation in the first place. Is it a case of a rogue customer, or should the builder behave more professionally?

How to knock down a porch

Nigel Gray the angry builder who didn’t get paid for a conservatory and a porch by a ‘rogue customer’ shows us how to demolish a porch in double quick time:

This website will be closed for one week

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Well, not exactly ‘closed’ – you can still view my pages, but I won’t be around.

I’m going on holiday with Ali and my two boys for a week in Spain from today.  And, I’m not allowed to take my laptop with me!  So, if you post a comment or contact me, then I’ll get back to you next weekend (7th June).

At the end of last month, I shared my stats of how the Renegade Conservatory Guy website is going, so I’ve decided to keep the idea going (at least for another month).

The month of May has not quite finished (one day to go), but I’m chuffed to see that the number of visitors has increased during the month:

This years visits and page views

It’s not a massive increase, but during April I had a really big hit with the story about Anglian being on Watchdog.  Page views are down a bit, but there’s still 12 hours to go.  I haven’t had any big hits this month, but generally the visitors and page views are on an upward trend.

The following two images show the search words that people are using to find the website:

Referring Search words

It is clear that there are a lot of people searching for topics related to Anglian Home Improvements such as:

Anglian complaint watchdog
Anglian Watchdog
watchdog Anglian
Anglian Complaints
Anglian Windows Watchdog
Anglian Windows Complaints
Anglian Home Improvements Watchdog
BBC watchdog Anglian Windows

The list goes on….

In fact, as I look through all the referrals I get from Google a big slice of them are from people interested in information about Anglian,  whether they are doing a good job and whether they are on the verge of bankruptcy.  Do people know something that I don’t?

The Directors of Anglian will be pleased to know that I do not intend for the future of the Renegade Conservatory Guy website to become a forum for complaints about any company.  A number of people have commented that any company has the potential to do a bad job, and I think we should maybe leave it at that for now.

There’s also been a number of visits to my site from people interested in Nigel Gray the builder who pulled down a conservatory for a ‘rogue customer’ who wouldn’t pay.  There also seems to be a lot of people interested in the demise of the Abbott Group, and the involvement of Sprint 1234.

The biggest development in May has been the new Renegade Conservatory Guy design, and the ability for people to subscibe to my posts, and receive an email as soon as I add something new.

Can you believe I now have 23 people subscribing to a blog about double glazing, and I didn’t need to apply the hard sell!

I’ve got some really good content for May already buzzing around in my mind…I can’t wait to share it with you.  I like this blogging thing.  I just wish I wasn’t the only person with a blog dedicated to double glazing and conservatory industry issues.  It would be so nice to find out what other people are thinking as well.

Rogue Customers – Nigel Gray launches a new website RogueCustomer.com

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

A few weeks ago I posted the story about Nigel Gray the builder who pulled down a conservatory in Shoreham because a ‘rogue customer’ would not pay for the work he had completed.

Nigel contacted me on this website and we spoke on the phone, and he told me about all the publicity he had received, including being headline news in New Zealand!  I’m sure Nigel was not expecting the level of national and international recognition he has received when he picked up his lump hammer!

Nigel Gray and Kevin meet MP Mr Gwyn Prosser

He also told me that he had been contacted by a chap called Kevin who was also experiencing a similar problem with an awkward customer, and they had set up a new website called roguetrader.com.

The website is designed to continue the campaign to change the law, and put in safeguards for companies who are unlucky enough to do business with rogue customers.  There’s a petition to sign and a blog, and all the latest news about how the campaign is doing.
