Sack the surveyor

At home this weekend we’ve been having perfectly good Rosewood uPVC windows replaced with our new range of cream uPVC windows.

In order to save time and money I decided to measure the windows myself, rather than getting one of the highly experienced West Yorkshire Windows surveyors around.

Here’s a couple of examples of my measuring skills:

With hindsight I should probably have made the above window a bit wider and taller, but luckily we’re having the whole house re-rendered so we should get away with it.

But, I’m not so sure about this one though:

Help!

Luckily, my wife is keeping out of the way of the fitters today, and has taken the kids to Bridlington. When she gets back I’ve got to try explain why the above window has 370mm of timber on the top. I’m going to suggest that the lads will just render over it, unless you guys can come up with a better plan???

I would leave home if i was you. At least for a couple of days.

  2. Better plan, tell West Yorkshire you need a show room window, get it for free, at least that’s what I would do if I bought from your bruv

  3. Jon – great idea. Do you think I should fly to Spain for a week or so, just in case?

Mike – the thought of having free windows never crossed my mind!

  4. Er, make another one ? I would stick to bloggin if i was you

    Hi Mathew

Sorry, I do nopt understand the pictures at all. They look perfectly fine to me. Though I may suggest cladding window 2 instead of rendering, it is far more effective and has saved our bacon on a number of occassions.

Keep up the good work !!!!

  6. lol – the worst case I have ever seen. how funny is that. Unfortunately what you saved in plastic and glass, has cost you in timber, render & internal plastering. I bet you re-make it, otherwise you’ll have to lower your curtain pole.

  7. ** Update **

As I was worried about how Ali would react to the window, I decided to go sit in a beer garden all afternoon to think about my options.

Unfortunately, this seemed to make things worse.

(I forgot to mention that I also forgot to order an opener in one of the bedroom windows, the fitters broke two units, and they had to board up the bathroom window because the glass was missing.)

  8. Matthew – Don’t know if you experience the same thing as me but it’s always your own job or your friends/family jobs that go wrong to cause maximum embarrassment.

  9. David – absolutely. We’re fitting my wife’s best friend’s mum and dad’s windows in a couple of weeks. She has requested a letterbox without brushes inside – she’s adamant that the letterbox must not under any circumstances have brushes. Apparently, she has OCD, so I’m worried about the job. It’s got disaster written all over it…

You know we were talking about us sorting out a deal with a conservatory…..well, purely coincidentally, we don’t need one now, but thanks anyway.

  11. Letterbox brushes – easily cured with a pair of scissors.

As for the windows – put the old ones back in and paint over them.

    I dunno – if you want a job doing……

  12. Paul – Lol! – we could work off your measurements if you prefer. If not, we have some highly efficient surveyors working for us!!

  13. Jon says:

There must be some more news on this unfolding story by now ?

I got the window remade, but we didn’t manage to get the glass in time to get fitted while the guys were here. So, they’re coming back on Sunday. They’re also replacing the window I forgot to order openers in, and the window in the bathroom I forgot to order at all!

Silver lining in is I sold the fitter my X5 car, so looking for something more environmentally friendly and cheaper to run.

Hi, I just came across this post after searching for ‘cream upvc’ windows. Do these come cream or are they sprayed cream. I had a few quotes 4 years ago (we decided to go to Oz instead of windows!) – these were sprayed cream. Can you offer any advice?

    Thanks
    Sally
