Double Glazing Industry 5 a side football competition

I was chatting with some industry colleagues today and they suggested a double glazing industry 5 a side football competition might be a good idea.

What do you think?

The idea would to have, maybe, four regional mini competitions in the North West, North East, South East and South West with some sort of knockout competition at each.  Then, the top two teams from each region go forward to a National Finals somewhere in the middle of the UK (Wakefield, for example).  Then we could have quarter finals, semi finals and a final.

I’m thinking aloud a bit here, but the main requirements would be:

  • At least 8 times in each region
  • Each team to represent a company associated with the double glazing industry
  • Each team to have 5 players, plus a couple of subs
  • There’ll be an entry fee to cover hire of indoor football pitches, and ideally a contribution to charity
  • We’ll do a bit of PR about the competition, with considerable bragging rights for the winning team
  • Good networking opportunity
  • Good reason for people to get fit
  • A good laugh in general

I’d be happy to pull it all together if there is interest from people in the industry to take part.

So, if you’re either interested in getting a team together, or interested in helping organise such an event, then please leave your comments below.

Golf competition much better idea! Too old for football.

I remember a similar thing sometime ago , it was played out at Kenilworth road Luton over a weekend. I attended with a team from Heywood williams windows for a couple of years. I seem to recall one of the glass mags organised it but it didn’t last as a number of teams put some ‘ringers’ in .
It might be worth insisting that the players are all on the books………….

Whoops , I just remembered , even most employees don’t even seem to be on the books in this industry :)

  3. Kevin – yes, we would need genuine employees of each company to take part (whether on the books, or CIS). So you putting forward an Osprey Windows team?

Steve – you know I don’t do golf. I was actually thinking we should insist players are 40 or over, although that would mean I’d have to be a ref.

  4. Kevin Ahern says:

We were a young company once with enough lads who would have been up for it , golf and motor bike racing are the sports currently preferred by our old crocs , if it were 3 aside and paid the lads overtime to attend , we may have a chance :)

  5. What if I said the BFRC were getting a team together?

  6. Anthony Wareing says:

I reckon I could get a team together but we are based in the Midlands and you have omitted us from your regions… :(

The only comment I would make is it all looks a bit drawn out…I would suggest you see how many teams enter and try and do it on one day or over a weekend to maintain interest…plus we could all gather in a hotel somewhere that has the required facilities…maybe if you could get some footy memoribilia from willing clubs you could throw in a charity auction in the evening as well?

  7. yeah defo up for thah mate though i will probably be in a advisory capacity

  8. Anthony – I had thought about just having one event rather than the regionals, so if we only get a few companies coming forward then this would be the solution.

And I like your charity auction idea too :-)

  9. Pete Gray says:

we would put a tailored systems company team forward….especially if there would be a chance to kick the Eurocell boys. i would certainly be able to find some football memoribilia for an auction. i agree with Anthony (although i guess it depends on interest) about being a bit drawn out. maybe just a north and south regional?

  10. Dave – don’t be soft, you could easily play. In fact, people might be suspicious that you’re a ringer!

Pete – Great news. I’ve got around 5 or 6 teams so far and I haven’t properly started pestering people.

Starting to think one big event will be best.

It’s great to know people are committing when I haven’t even told them how much yet ;-)

  11. Philip Parry says:

I’m sure Eurocell could put forward a profiles and conservatory roof team!

  12. Philip – excellent you’re more than welcome to submit two teams.

Think I’m going to need 32 teams to make it a ‘world cup’ format, and so far we seem to have around 8 teams interested….

“What if I said the BFRC were getting a team together?”

As long as they don’t referee , because they seem to make the rules up as they go !!

and as long as they are not in charge of collating the results , because they the team from Pilkington would win ……. even if they hadn’t entered :)

  14. Kevin – that’s very funny :-)

    Hi Renegade Conservatory Guy,

I’m sure we would get a team together. I think one big event would be best.

  16. Tom – great! I’ll put you on the list.

  17. TG says:

We would delighted if such a competition were to take place and would enter a team.

  18. Tony – great I’ll keep you informed…

  19. Colin Torley says:

I’m sure I could put together a team from VEKA although the only chance of me playing would be if we made it for over 50’s!
