Ban the ‘Bump Key’ in the UK

David Jennings of Universal Imports (UAP) has launched a new campaign to Ban the Bump Key in the UK.

Bump Keys

According to an email he has distributed:

Bump keys now pose a real threat to the security of every home, office, school and shop in the country.

In California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has recently signed a bill to add Bump keys to the list of items banned to be carried by the general public.

We want that same scheme in the UK. We want to have every specialist locksmith tool banned from sale to the general public, and sold and used only by qualified locksmiths and security professionals such as the Police.

So please help us by doing 2 things;

1. Please click on the web link below and then click to add your name to our Petition that we aim to present to Downing Street

2. Please send this e mail to as many people as you can.

The sooner we get all Bump Keys and other specialist locksmith tools off general sale in the UK, the safer we will all be.

The wording on the petition states:

The Ban the Bump Key campaign aims to stop the sale of specialist locksmith equipment to the general public.

This will help to ensure that tools capable of opening doors to homes and businesses remain only in the hands of recognised locksmiths and security professionals – and not in the hands of those with criminal intentions.

WHY? – Over 4 million websites mention lock bumping, a technique which can be used to open the cylinder locks found on approximately 65% of UK exterior doors.

- Bump keys can be bought by anyone for just a few pounds.

- Sites such as You Tube offer demonstrations and tips for mastering the lock bumping technique which can be used to break-in to homes.

- Bump keys, lock breakers and lock picks should only be available to recognised locksmiths and security professionals.

By signing the Ban the Bump Key petition you will be helping us to prevent thieves using specialist tools and techniques made widely available by the internet.

It seems like a sensible campaign to me and as such I have added most of my name to the No 10 Downing Street Petition.

I feel that although the vast majority of bump keys are purchased by nerds with an unhealthy interest in picking locks, the keys can get into the wrong hands. And, although lock bumping is relatively uncommon at the moment, with most burglars more like to jemmy doors or snap the cylinders, it makes sense to restrict the sale of specialist locksmith equipment to the general public.

  1. HERE IN BRAZIL little is known about such technique, am still single propellant DESSATECNICA NEAR, YET also developing a cylinder only capable NOT FOR LOCK – BUMPING
But also on others method known as PROFESSIONAL, the invention is COMPLEX BUT THE SUBSTANCE OF THE ROLLERS ARE WELL SIMPLE.

  2. This is useless says:

Fine, ban the bump keys, but keep in mind they are basically blank keys, and it’s really not difficult to simply pick these very same locks with a pen clip and a bobby pin if you’re practiced.

  3. G says:

Bit pointless if you ask me, let the police do the job of deciding weather someone has/uses these keys/equipment in the wrong manner, a window is much easier to brake rather than mess around for ages with locksmith tools. DON’T BE SUCH A KILLJOY! Where the heck is common sence? Do we not have it anymore? People should be able to do what they like as long as no law is broken. calling the Locksport “I feel that although the vast majority of bump keys are purchased by nerds with an unhealthy interest in picking locks” is very rude. You may as well ban learning, i would say some QUALIFIED locksmiths got interested in this way i bet…. What about future skills? kids now will be adults and future professionals.
